Preston Miller Post #1

I am reading Montana 1948 by Larry Watson. Right now I am only on page 25 so I am not that far into the book. In this book David Hayden, a young Montanan boy is next in line for the role of town sherif. Although he is still only in elementary school. The main problem of the story occurs when Marie, the families native american maid becomes ill. The family calls Dr. Frank, David's uncle, to come and check up on her. But, Mari doesn't want medical treatment, and refuses to have it. Wes, the local sheriff finds out why; but I'm not going to tell you because that will ruin the beginning of the story. One question I have so far in the story is who got Mari sick, or how did she get sick? I'm not quite sure what the theme of the book is yet but I think that it might be caring for others is a good way to show how much you care.

Uncle Frank was also a war hero and when he got back they threw a huge party for him. His dad got up on a picnic table and gave a speech. When his dad went up there he said "Now I would like to have my son come up here." I thought that was interesting because he has more then one son, and didn't specify which son he was talking about, everybody just knew which one.

  1. Whoa! I've read several responses to this book and never knew about the father's favoritism. Imagine how the other son must have felt! How does the other son react? Could sibling rivalry or envy be a theme? Is Uncle Frank the younger brother?

What is Mari's illness? I guess I've never know that, either.

Remember to proofread. Italicize the title of the book.

  2. David's dad, Wes, didn't really react when his father showed favoritism, I'm sure he already knew his father liked Frank better because he was a war hero and a doctor. I never I never really thought about it but i guess sibling rivalry could be a theme, even tho it is only in the book for a short amount of time and hasn't really come back up since then.
Mari is sick with pneumonia, but since this came from an unreliable source (Uncle Frank,) this may be false. What I think Mari is really sick from is something Uncle Frank gave her, because of there little "thing".
