Out of the dust-Blog #1

For free reading time, I am reading a book called Gone with the Wind. Karren Hesse is the author of this book, it received a John New berry Medal. I am almost halfway through my book and am really enjoying it. As far as I have read I think she is an amazing author.
The setting in the book took place in the 1920's. It was also during the Great Depression. The girl in the book, Billy Jo, she's around ten years old and lives in Oklahoma (the Panhandle). She is very skinny, freckle-faced, and has a hunger for playing fierce piano. Her dad had wished for a boy, so that's why her name sounds like a boys name.
Her mother gets pregnant again, and the dust bowl comes, they have a lot of droughts were they live so producing crops for food is very difficult and has a hard time providing for the family. An accident happens which severely puts a strain on Billy Jo and her father, a pail of kerosene had caught fire, her mom had ran out to get the father. Billy Jo thought to grab the pail and take it outside, her mom was coming back at the same time and the flaming oil splashed onto her apron and she caught on fire, while she was pregnant. She was burned very badly, when she was ready and expecting her child, she and the baby both died because of the terrible burns they got. After the accident, her father becomes depressed and doesn'w seem like himself. Billy Jo tries to help him but it doesn't seem to help. This is as far as I have gotten. So far I am loving the book! Great read.
