Hello Solon Spartans
I am currently in the process of reading the Hunger Games, written and illustrated by Suzanne Collins. So far I have only read the first chapter but I decided to post anyway because nobody else had. So far, I have found out that this book takes place in the future. In this future, the government is all powerful and keeps a tight watch on its people, kind of like the society we live in today, but more obvious (no need for the Patriot Act when government officials monitor every town.) This was brought on many years ago when the people of the United States started a revolution, ( like Ron Paul's, just more violent. However, the protest is quickly put down by the corrupt government at the time. In the surrender treaty there are a list of things the government forces the people to do, the more important of which is move to different "districts" to live, and that every year two children from each of these places would be selected to compete in the Hunger Games, a televised challenge like the Amazing race, except more dangerous and you could die. So far it is good, but I have only read one chapter. I like that it is different than the usual Sports Illustrated that I read, and is interesting to see what the future is like. I think the author of this books motivation was to really open everybody's eyes to the way that government is going, as well as to provide an action packed thriller to sit alongside the likes of books such as John Starks: My Life, and the seven Harry Potter books. The author really wants us to think about our strong trust in the government and wants us to know that unless we elect someone like Ron Paul who will stop the government monitoring its people, this fate is not far away. I have not really met a bulk of the characters since this is the first chapter so I haven't developed a favorite yet, and besides, who am I to judge their personalities? They all have something special to offer to this book. The best quote was by Madge, the protagonist when talking about her district she said District 12, where you can starve to death quietly. District 12 represents today what people might call Compton, Chicago, or even Harlem, as it is made up mainly of poor people. There are quite a few questions I have since the book just started but the main one would be what are the hunger games?

Your Reading Blog
This is where you will share what you're reading. Here's what I want to know when I'm reading your blog posts:
1. What book are you reading?
2. Who wrote it?
3. How far have you read?
4. What's happened in your book (be very brief)? If I want more information, I'll ask questions in the comments.
5. What do you think about it? Is it good? WHY?
6. Why did the author write this (other than making money)? What makes you think this was his/her motivation?
7. What's the theme? What big idea did the author want us to think about when writing this?
8. Who's the best character? Why? How has he grown or changed?
9. Type out a cool quotation from your book. Why is it important?
10. What questions do you have about your book?
Feel free to write anything else you notice about your book or author.

Welcome!
This is your English 9 blog. Through the course of the semester you will post to this blog at least six times. You must blog about two books that you read this semester, one per quarter. You will blog about each book three times.
We will discuss specific requirements later. For now, just start thinking about what books you would like to read.
Have fun!
